Methodology and Disclosures

This page explains how my stock analyses are prepared, what the ratings mean, and which risks you should be aware of. The analyses are prepared by Benjamin Seith, Managing Director of Aktienprofi Value Invest GmbH. They reflect my personal assessment, are addressed to all readers alike, do not take anyone's personal circumstances into account, and do not constitute investment advice.

How I value a company

Quality. I grade every company on 14 criteria from 1 (very good) to 6 (very poor), including market growth, competition, financial position, margin, return on capital, free cash flow, management, shareholder structure, capital allocation, business model, and moat. Together they form an overall grade. Existential single risks can cap the overall grade.

Earnings power. The valuation starts from adjusted earnings per share under IFRS or US GAAP, excluding clearly one-time items and excluding the adjusted figures the company defines itself. Where earnings do not reflect earnings power well, I use owner earnings or adjusted free cash flow instead. I treat net cash, meaning cash and financial investments minus financial debt, separately, so that a strong or weak balance sheet does not disappear into the earnings multiple.

Three scenarios over ten years. For a negative, a base, and a positive scenario, I set earnings growth per share for years 1 to 5 and 6 to 10, the payout ratio, and the valuation multiple at the end of the period. That multiple depends on the quality of the business, and a better overall grade justifies a higher one. Every growth assumption is explained in the analysis and checked against how often companies actually sustain such rates over ten years. The share price at the end of the period and the payouts are discounted to today.

Two discount rates. At 7%, the long-term average return of the stock market, each scenario yields its fair value. Anyone who pays it can expect the market return if the scenario materializes. At 10%, my personal minimum return, the result is the buy limit.

Holding companies, conglomerates, and plant operators. Where a company's value lies mainly in holdings or divisions, and for companies that develop energy plants themselves and operate part of them, I also value each part separately (sum-of-the-parts valuation). If that calculation drives the rating, the analysis says so explicitly.

What the three limits and four ratings mean

  • Buy limit: fair value with a margin of safety, discounted at 10% and weighted 35% negative, 50% base, and 15% positive scenario.

  • Hold limit: the weighted fair value, discounted at 7% and weighted 25%, 50%, and 25%.

  • Sell limit: the fair value of the positive scenario.

If the sum-of-the-parts valuation drives the rating, there is a range for the value of the parts instead of three scenarios. The buy limit is then its lower end, the hold limit the midpoint between the lower and upper end, and the sell limit its upper end.

The rating follows from where the share price stands relative to these limits. Buy means the price is below the buy limit. Hold means it is between the buy limit and the hold limit. The stock is no longer cheap enough for a new purchase, but the expected return is still above the market return. Review sale means it is between the hold limit and the sell limit. Weighted across all three scenarios, the price then implies an expected return below the market return. Sell means it is above the sell limit, and none of my three scenarios supports the price.

Investment horizon

My assessments refer to a long-term investment horizon, and the model covers ten years. They are not a forecast of where the share price will move over the next days, weeks, or months. A rating applies until the next update of the analysis.

Risks and sensitivity of the assumptions

Stocks can fluctuate sharply and can lose their entire value. My three scenarios are assumptions, not the limits of what can happen. Results can be better than the positive scenario and worse than the negative scenario. Each analysis shows how strongly the result depends on the assumptions through the three scenarios themselves, and the negative scenario is shown with its distance from the share price. In addition, for every analysis I check whether two percentage points more or less growth in the base scenario would change the rating. If it would, the analysis names the assumption, the limit, and the price. Exchange rates, interest rates, regulation, and single major events can overtake an assessment faster than an update is possible.

Updates

I update an analysis when there is a reason to, without a fixed schedule, for example after annual or quarterly results or after a material event. Every update is published as a separate post with its own date, and the original analysis points to the latest version.

All recommendations of the past twelve months

Members of the analysis platform can find the list of all my recommendations of the past twelve months in the members' area under "Recommendation List", each entry with the date and time of its first publication in German, the three limits, the share price at that time, the rating, and its validity.

Own positions

I personally hold or trade many of the stocks I analyze. Whether I am invested in a company is stated in the respective analysis.

Changes to the methodology

The methodology as described here has applied since August 10, 2026. Earlier changes are not listed individually. The overview below lists the changes that move the limits of many stocks or change the meaning of a rating.

August 10, 2026 Two fixed discount rates, 7% for the hold limit and 10% for the buy limit, independent of the quality of the business. The valuation multiple at the end of the period is derived in a new way. Derivatives are included in net cash.

August 13, 2026 A single existential risk can cap the overall grade, so that good grades on the other criteria cannot outvote it.

August 16, 2026 The buy limit weights the scenarios 35%, 50%, and 15% instead of 25%, 50%, and 25% like the hold limit. For holding companies, the sum-of-the-parts valuation can drive the rating if a named and scheduled event can close the discount to the value of the parts. Before, it served only as a cross-check.

August 17, 2026 New sell limit and four ratings instead of three. Above the hold limit, I now distinguish "Review sale" and "Sell".

August 18, 2026 New names for the same values. The former sell threshold became the hold limit on August 17, 2026, and the former buy threshold became the buy limit on August 18, 2026.

August 27, 2026 The grading criterion financial position is redefined, with refinements on September 15, 2026, and October 9, 2026.

September 2, 2026 For plant operators with their own project development, a sum-of-the-parts valuation is added as a second calculation.

September 23, 2026 Share buybacks enter the growth assumptions only to the extent they have been announced or are supported by the company's track record.

October 1, 2026 Whether a balance sheet item belongs in net cash depends on how it works, not on the industry. Since October 4, 2026, customer funds that are only passed through are deducted.

October 7, 2026 Investment companies that report a net asset value are graded on three criteria with their own metrics. For a holding company without measurable earnings power, the sum-of-the-parts valuation drives the rating even without such an event.

October 9, 2026 The frequencies with which companies actually sustain a growth rate over ten years are corrected. I check the growth assumptions against them.

October 10, 2026 With high net debt, I remove interest from adjusted earnings because the debt is already deducted in net cash. Since October 15, 2026, this also applies to the accretion of deducted purchase prices.

October 16, 2026 Sensitivity is no longer shown as a separate chart in the analysis. If two percentage points of growth in the base scenario would change the rating, the analysis says so in the strongest counterargument.

October 19, 2026 If a company earns little on newly invested capital, I use the dividend as the payout in the base and positive scenarios, and since October 28, 2026, a higher payout in the negative scenario.

October 26, 2026 "Fair value" now refers only to the value discounted at 7% in each scenario. The distance of the negative scenario from the share price is measured against it. Loss-making divisions enter the sum-of-the-parts valuation with a negative value.

October 29, 2026 Share buybacks count only net, meaning to the extent they actually reduce the share count.

In addition, I continually refine individual rules, for example which balance sheet items belong in net cash in certain industries, or how real estate companies, insurers, and holdings enter the grading and valuation. If such a refinement moves the limits of a stock, the next update of that stock says so.
